It's the usual.
A few busy and chaotic days have passed, begging to be thoroughly torn apart and explained, examined, for my peace of mind of and that of many others.
It's that time of day when you return home to your family, your friends, and go on a rant, needed to let off some steam. You start, perhaps, with the insults and complaints...the annoying coworkers and clients. You save the best for last, the exciting parts of your day...its much more interesting that way.
It's the time where you reconnect with your friends and loved ones over a meal and share your lives. But have you ever had to so much to say, so much that needed to be said, that you don't even know where to begin...and therefore just ramble?
. . .
A 25 minute walk in the blistering noon day sun reaching well over 90 degrees finally led me to the center of Florence; i.e. free Wifi at McDonalds. Unfortunately, my small shared apartment in the quartiere San Jacobino doesn't come with internet, or air conditioning, or thick walls. But above all, on the top of my complaints is the heat, and even that isn't so bad. Why? Because my roommate Alex and I are saving quite a bit of money on electricity from not having to heat the water 15 minutes before hand to take a shower, the cold is exactly what we want and need after a long day in the sun.
Let me stop myself now, turn around...the beginning is always best, isn't it?
The plane ride was what I expected. A cramped, stuffy cabin with a crying baby a few rows over and overly friendly, trilingual flight attendants. After landing in Zurich, I had about 2 hours to go before my connecting flight to Florence, so I wandered around the mall-like concourse and admired from afar the delicious and overly expensive Swiss chocolate. I only wished that I was a true chocolate lover, that way I wouldn't feel guilty over 20 euros spent on something I could devour in 10 minutes top.
The sadness from the lack of chocolate didn't last long however, because flying from Zurich to Florence was one of the most amazing experiences of my life. No, there is really nothing special about being on an airplane...but flying over the alps was absolutely breathtaking. I had to stop myself from telling the person next to me "look out the window!! Your missing it!" The snow capped mountains seemed so close, yet I knew we had to be hundreds of feet above them. Even the clouds seemed fluffier than in the Midwest.
I landed in Florence with no problems and caught a taxi to my apartment. First experience in Italy: almost dying in a taxi. Second experience: climbing to the fifth floor of my apartment building carrying 30 kilos of luggage. If I don't lose at least 10 pounds this month, I'll blame it all on my one gelato a day quota...not to mention the amazing pasta. Did I mention that there is no elevator in the apartment?
Hi Meghan, How wonderful, studing in Florance! I loved vacationing in Italy, and would love to return....
